SO BIG TO BE USEFUL...
HUMILIATION IS EDUCATIONAL AND TO EDUCATE IS TO EMPOWER.
Ben Onyekelu Olisa
SCIENCE VS ART = CONFUSION
I'm a student in the distinguished discipline of Arts while he is also a student under the highly placed discipline of Sciences.
I came for night class, may be because I wanted to skip my constant visitor who visit when my Cupboard is up-to-date. Apart from his frequent visit, night class wouldn't have been a better option because my lodge is always as quite as grave yard. No party, no much happening guys, all boys lodge; just guys who doesn't keep much friends in the Den and condemned their selves to such a quite place, but that my friend said 'no no no no, where u lives does not matter as long as the cupboard is up-to-date'.
I would've love to be in a quite class and in the whole Den, Pharmacy theatre Hall has the prestige of silence may be because it harbors students whose mindset is that they are in The Den just to read, read and know books. But unlike my Discipline, we believe there is more to life in the Den, than to read only and know books alone.
I sat and kept my books on the desk and commenced reading.
In about five minutes, He came in and sat next to me. My touch lamp
wasn't that healthy, so I wholeheartedly shifted for him to balance
well, because his Florescent Reading Lamp can serve a whole class. He
looked at my books and smiled? He opened his book and began to
calculate, improvising his phone for calculator.
You I have said it
on countless basis, that I'm addicted in trying to know what doesn't
concern me. I was more like piping inside his book but couldn't
understand what he was reading or solving.
" You just looked into
the book" he said boastfully patting my back. "You know you art students
only read stories. This is spectrophotometer and colorimeter. Its
is........."
I was calm, listening even though I was in ocean of confusion.
"Wow you science students are trying o. So after applying this
procedure, you get to know whether the drug has the actual Milligram and
quality?"
"Yes of course...everything will be there. I know you
don't know anything about what I just said but that's science" he said
proudly and began to read. He brought out biscuits and offered me one. I
thanked him, but i did not collect it may be because I was preparing my
next question for him.
"Can you use this same procedure to know if this biscuit is actually what it's supposed to be?"
"No.. It's just for drugs"
"Then what shall we use for biscuits"
"Biscuit is not a drug...I'm a pharmacist. We deal on drugs and chemicals not biscuits" he said in angry tone.
"But biscuit has a preservative chemical"
"Man I produce drugs not biscuit... May be you go to agricultural and
industrial Engineering department or chemistry and ask them, they can
tell you that"
OK, I said and began to read. He looked at my book and yet again dashed out an intimidating laughter.
"Why are u laughing?"
"You know you guys are always good in giving little things a very big name, just to make your self know in grammar"
"Hahahah" i laughed and pattered his back. "This contains a Hamitic
hypothesis and genealogical accounts of Igbo and jakun-aro origin. In it
there are other homegrown accounts of it's political orders and social
hierarchical order. For example Igbo origin has many hypothesis......"
By the time I could finish, he was half asleep.
"And what's that all about?"
"I just told you now... origin of Igbos in different accounts or perspectives...."
"You know you arts students love speaking much grammar..."
"The same way you guys do also...."
And that was the end. He couldn't argue much and left angrily. I wondered what I have done. I confided in my half dead touch light and moved on. My arguments punishes me each time because I don't shape words.
No place is higher
Do not look down on others
Be humble, at least all road leads to similar places.
Just try to be near perfect in your discipline.
Still me Ben, encouraging you to be positive and polite, no place is higher.
DEAR gods AND goddesses
Dear gods and goddesses,
From my little abode I write to you, for we have a lot to discus. Do
not look Leary for theatricality in this "dramatic" letter and do not
mind its technicalities, not even the grammatical and sentence
structures because you're reading from a humble imperfect excellent god;
perhaps a great god in making. In as much we all know that Mr. and Mrs.
poets has their license to do as they wish with words, we the
storytellers should at least have a pinch of that license also, because
all gods should god. gods should sometime create words that it's
grammatical order and philosophical leaning and encapsulation it
underpin would be nice and his own invention. By this, we agree that
stories matters. You have heard from today's contemporary gods that have
flew their templates into the annex of history that story and the mode
with which it was told matters. "malign. But stories can also be used to
empower, and to humanize. Stories can break the dignity of a people.
But stories can also repair that broken dignity." Chimamanda Ngozi
Adichie.
While creating a story, dear god and goddess of word,
create inspiring images. Do not tell a story from a biased mind, stories
should at least climb a level which African greatest god of word, Chinua Achebe called "A balance of story". Your story shouldn't center
on stereotypes alone.
"The single story creates stereotypes, and the problem with stereotypes is not that they are untrue, but that they are incomplete. They make one story become the only story." C. N. Adichie.
Dear gods and goddesses, pick up your pen and begin to
create images not imitations. Create living lives that can defend their
selves not dumb and dead images.
Create peripherals that can inspire and impact the earthly man.
Dive into the ocean of illusions and magnify illusions.
Place your analytical lens on the platform of justice and equity because gods are not to be partial.
When you want to criticize a creation of a fellow god, observed the
literary etiquette of criticism. And also do same if you must appreciate
it; the duo literary criticism and literary appreciation should walk in
pari pasu.
When you want to create images of afflicted persons, try to be sincere and truthful a bit.
Fiction shouldn't be all fiction; fiction should at least respect some
truths if it is directed to humans, even animals deserves true
representation. You have read the fictitious 'things fall apart", which
became a work that stood out as a source for Igbo lifestyles. If such
stories like that were told to dispossess and malign people, what fate
would Achebe's creation placed the entire Igbo nation on the vast
village of literary world?
gods may not actually be good
historians as claimed by many diplomats, but that however is far from
truth. History can not be told only from hypothesis, graphites and
archeological findings and carbon dating. In as much as history is
peoples past, stories are also history of humans, so there dear
goddesses and gods of word, tell stories to reflect real history of
things.
Do you have new images?
Do you even have a half created humans?
Do you fear if it has been told before?
No story is new.
All stories have been told before.
But unique stories with real images stands out to be new stories that have not been told before.
Pick up your pen and create one, story matters.
You knew we still have many things to talk about, dear gods and goddesses but my pen is becoming a half beast of burden to my script. Go out now and create great humans, great society because you're great gods and goddesses.
Still me Ben, a humble and imperfect excellent god of words urging you to create more.
LOVE VAL
Love in Val....
In my bed I think of you all
Now on my desk, I have you all beside me
And tomorrow, I have you all in my heart.
